Dance Meditation
When we say meditation, what comes to mind is dreadful sitting down and concentrating. However, meditation can take many forms in our life. It seems complicated, but it is easy to achieve if you have the right tools. It is a process where we attempt to reach a level of thoughtlessness. Complete thoughtlessness is very difficult to attain, but we can use tools such as breathing and bodily movements to accomplish this.
Have you ever wondered, how it would be to be four years old again? When we are growing up as kids our worries are minimal, we are just present in the present, not thinking about ten years from now. How do we do this again? How do we achieve mere 5-10 minutes of thoughtlessness or just experience that lost kid inside us?
Have you ever wondered what the definition of YOU is? When we roam around in our society, we are mostly part of the persona which defines us. We set ourselves with certain assumptions and metrics which represents us. We are sometimes prisoners of our thoughts or principles for example. I am the owner of blah blah, so I should behave a certain way, or I am CEO of the firm, I should not behave this way. This is good when you are in that role but not good to get our inner child out, to get that peace of mind for 5 to 10 minutes because that CEO image or owner image refuses to leave you during meditation as well.
During my different meditation experiences in life, I realized that the traditional form of meditation takes time to achieve. In our day to day life, it is difficult to sit at one location and ignore our surroundings when a million things are happening. Achieving a simple piece of mind in this atmosphere can take hours.
Enter … Dance Meditation. To make meditation process easy to adopt and follow, I started working on a new method which is called dance meditation.
The objective is to use progressive music and movements to bring out your inner child during this group exercise. We follow the music blindfolded (with our eyes closed) along with some instructions to get start in the meditation activity. When I (meditation instructor) feel participants have achieved a state of thoughtlessness in our movements, we stop the dance. As a group we sit down or lie down, close our eyes, and focus on breathing. Breathing is one of the most primal activities known to man. We do not decide to breathe, it just happens. This one activity is subconscious. With this activity as a tool, we try to enter the subconscious mind where positive instructions have a direct and powerful impact.
At this point in your meditation, these instructions are effective and have long-lasting results. During my tenure as a meditation instructor, I have been glad to meet people who have had amazing experiences.
Potential outcomes of dance meditation include-
An eruption of deeply rooted emotions of happiness and pain, which needed to be experienced but hidden away or harming you emotionally
A feeling of happiness of love and positivity
Feeling inspired and in control.
Note: Dance meditation has no religious affiliations, it is purely conducted for a healthy state of mind.
